This support page is to give people the understanding of the dangers incorporated in doing DIY electrical instillations. This page is only here as a guide and any one using information from this website does so at there one risk and Pro IT Electrical take no responsibility.
If you have an electrical shower installed and it fails and you replace the shower unit how do you know if the existing wiring is capable of supplying the current of the new shower?
If the new shower is more powerful it may keep tripping the MCB if this happens you MUST NOT upgrade the MCB as the cable will not take the extra current therefore the cable will overload and burn out.
We often talk about ring main’s, what is a ring main? A ring main is normally a series of socket outlets going round in a ring starting at the consumer unit and returning back to the same MCB in the consumer unit. If you take a socket off for some reason you need to make sure you don’t break the ring circuit as this will overate the cable making it dangerous. If the earth becomes disconnected any appliances requiring an earth could also become potentially dangerous as well as reducing the effectiveness of the protective devices.
Remember when rating a trip for your circuit you must also make sure the cable is capable of taking more than the trip. If the cable is rated less than the trip, the cable will burn out with a risk of an electrical fire
