In most older homes the old wiring has been partially rewired and in most cases done bit at a time giving rise to sections never being replaced. The old wire is copper insulated in rubber covered in cloth and this wiring is normally unsafe and fails the safety checks.

The older homes only had a limited number of sockets in the rooms so additional sockets are added to the circuit normally without consideration to the existing circuit and whether it can cope with the additional load. The picture on the left shows an old consumer unit that has burn out due to loads larger than its original designed.

The second & third picture on the left is an old style fuse box with rewire-able fuses, if you have a fuse box (consumer unit) like this it is worth having your electrics checked and your fuse board upgraded to one that incorporates an RCD and MCB’S to give better safety.

The Last picture on the left shows a modern consumer unit giving the impression that all the wiring is in good condition and correctly wired. We have found this to sometimes be misleading and without proper testing would not be obvious. As mentioned above there could be old wiring in parts of the circuit, incomplete earth circuits (common on old lighting circuits) and incorrect fuses. Incorrect fuses are very dangerous as this can cause the cable to over heat and possible cause a fire. (incorrect fuse for the cable ratting.)

The Government introduced new regulations regarding electrical work in the home (Part P) This new regulation only allows registered competent people to undertake this work. Any work undertaken should have a minimum of Part P accreditation and issue a completion certificate of the work undertaken.

All work undertaken by Pro IT Electrical is done by a fully qualified electrician and is also Part P accreted. We are accredited by ELECSA. To find out more about ELECSA look on the FAQ page.
