This help page is to give people the chance to ask electrical related questions by email and the answer will be posted on this page with the question. This page is only here as a guide and any one using information from this website does so at there one risk and Pro IT Electrical take no responsibility.

Q: I am about to by a house but how do I know if the electric’s are in good condition?

A: Without a full test this is difficult; ask if they have had any work done and if they have any test reports on the electrics. Also look at the consumer unit and see what type it is and if it is old assume you need a full rewire if it new you will not be able to know without a full inspection.

Q: I am having an extension built can I put the sockets and light switches at the height as my old ones.

A: The answer is yes you can unless you are also putting in disabled access in. It is always best to check this with the building inspector when you deviate from the guide lines.

Q: I need to rewire downstairs but I have a tiled bathroom floor how can I get round this problem.

A: This is one of the joy’s of rewires. You will need to see which way the joists are running and see if you can use a pull through. If the joists run in the right direction you will need to punch a small hole in the ceiling and repair it later and use a pull through to pull your cables in but if the joists are against you the only option is to pull the ceiling down (normally cheaper than relaying a bathroom floor) but the choice is yours.
